湖南的冬天，来的悄然而短暂，那是因为和它的地理位置有关，紧靠长江边，水资源丰富，且三面环山，有着鲜明向北敞开的地貌特性，这种特色尤以湘西与湘南山地更为显著。或许正是在这种地理地势的影响下，湖南冬季处在冷季风控制下，更有利于冷空气的长驱直入。让人连棉袄，棉被，还没准备好，冬天就草草来了。

几年前就在网络上看到有关湖南该不该集中供暖的争论，但至今也没有结果，还有人甚至觉得“南方也要集中供暖?简直就是笑话!"湖南人往往会问：冬天你在湖南居住过吗?这样的声音一直存在着，或许只有在湖南住过的人方可理解湖南冬天的冷，即使那样短，也会冷出个样子来，给你看一看。要不然也就不会有这样的争论了。

湖南的冬天不比北方的冬“粗犷”，冷得粗暴而热烈;也不比更南的广东和海南，四季如春，冬天也没个样子，就像小孩子过家家，总不成个气候。湖南则不然，虽然夏天很热，颇具南方地域特征，但是冬天却是异常的寒冷。正值冬季最冷时，甚至把人都可以冻出“内伤”来。

尽管湖南有鱼米之乡的美誉，可一旦到了冬天情况可就不太一样了，呼啸着的北风才不管你是不是鱼米之乡，我行我素，不管不顾。冷风吹打着面颊，似乎时刻都要从衣缝里，裤管下钻进去，努力剥夺我们身上微存的温暖。如此冷的天，不仅人耐不住，动物也像吹响了集结号，消失的无影无踪。这种急切的冷，让湖南大地顺刻变得那么安静。
