Desert Flower

Desert Flower

《Desert Flower》

《Desert Flower》

《Desert Flower》读后感(三):The ever-changing face of Waris Dirie

From a humble female nomad in the Somalia desert, to a dazzling supermodel on international T-walks, to a Bond girl, then to a UN special representative in the fight for woman’s rights, Waris Dirie exhibits an ever changing face with great toughness and strengths to survive in her impressive book Desert Flower. Just like fortune turns everything upside down, Waris Dirie too has experienced momentous twists and turns that were seldom undergone by anyone else.

As a child, she was in charge of taking care of goats. She usually walked miles and miles of desert to find greenery for her animals to graze on, while beasts like lions just stood aside staring. She developed a natural response to nature, which explains why she went to such extreme lengths to smell the sand, to feel the barks on the journey back to Somalia for a final close-up.

Waris Dirie is wild and untamed, characteristic of everything the Somalia desert has to offer. She played tricks with Dad’s little wife, without giving in. she was in every way a true rebel, against authorities, against what we cherish as important such as fame and social status. But she was also a devotee, believing in God’s will. Throughout the book, she kept saying, if god is willing, it will happen. Being raised up on a land poor as dirt, she has learned to appreciate small things. That’s what distinguishes her from ordinaries like you and me.

Despite great sufferings, she never complains. Like she said in the first chapters, negative feelings consume energy. So no matter how terrible life was at desert, she and her family would always try to get themselves together, singing and clapping hands in front of a bonfire at night. Therefore, she doesn’t understand why the so-called cosmopolitans in America keep damaging their health by worrying. These people are bound by their insatiable desires for more. But fame, social status, and wealth means nothing or at least very little to Waris. She takes health as the most important thing.

She also thanked god for empowering her to travel miles and miles out of desert, thanking Him for creating a world of peace and beauty, which is my favorite part. Many of us live and complain, always feeling owed, and never turning around to see how times have moved on from the mire of past sufferings, and how lucky we are to be free from battles and fatal diseases. And many of us regret to be born, without knowing this is the gift from god.

Still there are places where conflicts and poverty persist, which is why every one of us should care.

Waris, a living legend.
