老舍先生以“对于一个在北平住惯的人，像我，冬天要是不刮风，便觉得是奇迹”引发读者的想像，让读者脑海中浮现出一幅朔风怒号、天寒地栗的萧条画面，用这幅画面中的“寒”色衬托济南冬天的“暖”色;又以“对于一个刚由伦敦回来的人，像我，冬天要能看得见日光，便觉得是怪事”调动读者的想像，使读者仿佛看到了一幅伦敦灰雾惨淡的阴郁图画，用这幅画面中的“暗”色衬托济南冬天的“明”色。这还不够，作者还让我们看了一幅热带地区毒辣辣的烈日高照的可怕画面，再用这幅画的“热”色衬托济南冬天的“温”色。正是用了色调和对照，用了绘画艺术的“以色赋形”的烘托方法，作者将济南冬天阳光和煦、天朗地秀的总体画面勾勒了出来。

第二，从纷繁景物中，略去次要的部分，抓住主要景物的主要特征加以突出的表现。

这是山水画法。描绘济南的大地，老舍先生所用的正是“以大观斜的中国山水画的构图取景方法。作者展开想像的翅膀飞上济南的云天俯瞰大地，然后对济南大地作了简笔的写意描绘。画城，不画它的东西南北，“一个老城，有山有水，全在天底下晒着阳光，暖和安适地睡着，只等春风来把它们唤醒”(注：此句中的山是济南城中的山)。一些琐碎的细部都被略去了，画的只是冬天济南城秀美的睡态，留下充分的余地让读者去联想、想像，进行艺术的再创造。画山，不画它的上下左右，“小山整把济南围了个圈儿，只有北边缺着点口儿”。一齐笔就抓住了景物的主要特征，紧之后就引导读者展开艺术的联想和想像：“这一圈小山在冬天个性可爱，好像是把济南放在一个小摇篮里，它们安静不动地低声地说：‘你们放心吧，这儿准保暖和。’”借这种联想、想像，使画面活灵飞动起来。画人，不画人的男女老少，不但如国画一样略去耳鼻眉目，连形体也完全略去，而只画了济南冬天人物情态的最主要的特征：“济南的人们在冬天是面上含笑的。”和城与山，浑然构成一幅完美的图画。

第三，精心设计景物和构图，层层展现景物形象。

绘画是“空间艺术”，须将空间并列的景物按照美的原则加以巧妙的布置。这种绘画的技巧，老舍也用到他的散文中去了。如果说第二段画的浑然一体的济南大地是一幅写意画，那么第三段画的美态纷呈的济南雪景则更接近于工笔画。

作者依山写景，透过写美的小山各个细部的雪光、雪色、雪态，画出了小山的秀美。在艺术结构上取了两层布置。先进行工笔的分笔描绘，从山上、山尖、山坡一向到山腰，一步步地细看，一笔笔地轻描：它是白的，“树尖上顶着一髻儿白花”，松的翠与雪的白相映生色;它是银的，“给蓝天镶上一道银边”，如洗的蓝天与似银的雪相映生辉;它是彩色的，“给山们穿上一件带水纹的花衣”是它的色，“这件花衣好像被风儿吹动，叫你期望看见一点更美的山的肌肤”是它的态，在色和态的描绘里写出了静中的动;它更有世上最动人的容色，艳艳夕阳的斜照下，它像少女一样“忽然害了羞，微微露出点粉色”，在傍晚雪光的渲染中画出了形中的情。真是一笔一景，一景一态。这一段分笔描绘，从方法看是用工笔，从意境看依然着力于写意。中国绘画讲究“气韵生动”，分笔描画的雪景，不是呆板的，而是生动的。一连串的动词，将读者带入联想、想像的意境，读者所感受到的不仅仅是雪的光、色、态的外在美，而且是雪的情韵，雪的内在的美。作者所创造的，正是“气韵生动”这一绘画艺术的最高境界。

正是为了让这种画境更完美，第四段作了雪景的第二层描绘。在分笔勾写后总绘雪景，将古老的城，城内，城外，山坡，村庄，整个大地放入雪景之中。结句直接点明：“这是张小水墨画，也许是唐代的名手画的吧。”

第四，突出自己最鲜明的印象和感受，以唤起读者类似的体验，产生身临其境之感。

济南称泉城，水是有名的;济南的水来自大地的深处，浩浩荡荡，一年四季奔涌不息，这样美的形象如何画出作者舍弃了济南冬水的种种表象，借自己的印象和感受去概括水的鲜明形象，在鲜明的形象中深入抒写自己独特的感受。先是着力渲染了济南冬水的“绿”，一连串五个“绿”字，作者描述的是绿萍的绿、水藻的绿、水面柳影的绿，托出的却是水的绿。读着这些绿萍、绿藻、绿柳，我们会自然联想到滋养出它们的水，感受到蕴蓄在济南冬水里的绿的精神、绿的生命。之后着力渲染了济南冬水的“活”。水流的一切细节乃至具体形态都淡化了、消失了，留在笔端的，只有水的那股蓬勃的生机：“空中，半空中，天上，自上而下全是那么清亮，那么蓝汪汪的。”自然中的水是不可能流到天上去的，这已是感情化的水，艺术化的水，是老舍先生以画家的眼睛观察景物所得到的独特的印象。在平面的绘画艺术中，为了表现出水的特有的态、特有的势，流水就完全能够流向空中，流到天上去，这不是出色的绘画艺术又是什么结尾处，作者又在水色、水光、水影之中，用了全篇最鲜亮明丽的色彩给泉城留下了一个美丽的倩影：“这块水晶里，包着红屋顶，黄草山，像地毯上的小团花的小灰色树影;这就是冬天的济南。”
