AFTER THE DRAGONFLIES

Dragonflies were as common as sunlight hovering in their own days backward forward and sideways as though they were memory now there are grown-ups hurrying who never saw one and do not know what they are not seeing the vein in a dragonfly's wings were made of light the veins in the leaves knew them and the flowing rivers the dragonflies came out of the color of water knowing their own way when we appeared in their eyes we were strangers they took their light with them when they went there will be no one to remember us P.19

FROM OUR SHADOWS

There are so many words for sadness and for joy so few maybe none that can tell the sound of that secret spring welling up from before words though when its voice rises within us we want to be able to tell someone about it if they will stay to hear talk about what is beyond words sadness can rise in us in the midst of happiness and joy can take us by surprise in the midst of great sadness both of them know us from before we were here but if we speak to them only sadness lingers to hear us out joy disappears to wait for us it may be where we least expect it page 7

有那么多词语表达悲伤 而鲜少词语表达快乐 也许没有一个 能描述 那眼秘密泉水 从词语前面涌出的声音 虽然当它的嗓音 在我们内心响起时 我们希望能把这些 向别人描述 如果他们愿意停下来倾听 谈论 词语以外的东西 悲伤就会在幸福之时 在我们内心升起 快乐会在巨大的悲伤之时 突然占有我们 他们两个都认得我们 从我们来这里之前 但如果我们对他们说话 只有悲伤逗留不去 听我们说完 快乐却消失不见 也许会等着我们 在我们最想不到的地方 （柳向阳 译）
